Elle Canada November 2008

Posted in Elle Canada at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

Anne Hathaway graces the cover of the November issue of Elle Canada. I’m a big fan of Anne and couldn’t wait to get it home to read the article. She’s such a classic beauty and a great actress who I absolutely loved in The Devil Wears Prada. Elle’s beauty editors also put together a list of their top 25 beauty steals. There’s a few on the list that I want to check out. And last but not least there’s an article on re-creating the natural makeup looks that have been on the runways.

Available on newsstands now.

I hope everyone has a very spooky Halloween tonight. I know I will.

Calgon Brazilian Beauty Body Lotion

Posted in Calgon, Moisturizer, Product Review at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

I was looking for a body lotion I could put in my bag – meaning it couldn’t have a pump top, I needed something I could close. I hate having dry hands while I’m out and having to wait til I get home to moisturize. As soon as I smelled Calgon’s new Brazilian Beauty body lotion at the store, I knew it was the one. It smells tropically fresh without being too overpowering. It reminds me of sitting on a tropical beach somewhere soaking up the sun.

It leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized for hours without being greasy.

The Brazilian Beauty scent is available in a body lotion, body scrub, and body mist. I just might have to check out the body mist next, I think I hear it calling my name.

The best part of all is that the Brazilian Beauty body lotion is a very affordable $6 at your local drug store.

Flare November 2008

Posted in Flare at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

I was so excited when I got my November issue of Flare in the mail last week. Emma Watson, the actress who plays Hermione Granger was on the cover! In case you’ve been under a rock for the last ten or so years, Hermione is one of the characters in Harry Potter. Anyone who knows me knows that I love all things Potter, so I couldn’t wait to read the article and see what she was wearing. There’s even a page full of Emma’s favorite things. I can’t believe how grown up she looks. There’s also a great article on Flare’s beauty editor’s best picks for the season. Want sexy looking hair? Look no further than the article with all the facts that you need to keep your hair looking great.

Rimmel Eye Shadow in Smokey Blue

Posted in Eyes, Eyeshadow, Makeup, Product Review, Rimmel at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

I was at Walmart looking around in the cosmetics area for some new eyeshadow. The Rimmel eye shadow quad in Smokey Blue (004) stuck out as soon as I saw it. The colors range from a very light blue to deep dark blue, and as the name implies, they’re the perfect colors for a smokey eye.

While the plastic used to make the quad looks and feels cheap, I was actually pretty impressed with the eyeshadow. It went on smoothly and stayed put, although it was tougher than other eyeshadows to blend it properly. The eyeshadow does contain a little shimmer, but it’s not over the top.

These quads are available in 8 different colors. If I get another one I think I might have to go with the Smokey Purple – I love purple eye shadows, it really makes my eyes pop.

This is the first product I’ve ever bought from Rimmel – and I have to say I think I’ll be a repeat customer. I really like the colors in this quad and it was easy on the wallet. You can’t do better than that.

Available at your local drugstore for $5.

Sally Beauty Supply Store

Posted in Sally Beauty at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

I was out Christmas shopping yesterday in a part of town that I usually don’t go to. Coming out of Designer Depot I saw what I thought was a Sally Beauty Supply across the parking lot. At first I thought it couldn’t be, I thought they only had them in the US, but as I got closer I saw that it was the real thing!

It was so much fun looking around. One of the things I’m most excited about is the nail polish. They carry Orly and China Glaze. And evben better, they’re at reasonable prices! My birthday is coming up, as well as Christmas, so I think I’m going to add a couple polishes to my list.

While I only had a quick look around cause I had someone with me who was waiting in the car, I can’t wait to go back and discover some new beauty products.

To find out if there’s a Sally Beauty Supply store near you check out their website at sallybeautysupply.com and use the store locator.

Tone Sugar Glow Body Wash

Posted in Body, Body Wash, Product Review, Tone at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

I recently got a sample of Tone Sugar Glow Body Wash and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately I was only able to get two showers out of the sample so the next day I was on the hunt for it at the drug store.

It contains sugar which exfoliates your skin, which is a great addition considering winter and the cold weather that brings dry skin is on the way. The scent is tropically luxurious, without being overpowering. It’s a great smell to wake up to. It’s safe on my sensitive skin, it doesn’t cause any reactions. While my skin felt squeaky clean, it wasn’t left feeling too dry. All in all, I love everything about it.

While I used the body wash, it’s also available in bar soap.

Available at your local drugstore for $6.

Dove Shine Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner

Posted in Dove, Hair, Product Review at 2:54 pm by geeekygirl

I thought my hair was looking kind of dull lately so that last time I was in the shampoo aisle I thought Dove’s Shine Therapy would be the perfect thing for me to try to bring back some beautiful hair.

I have to say I was pretty impressed with the results. It took a couple weeks to see a difference, but once I did I was really impressed. This is a clarifying shampoo, which means that it gets rid of build up from shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. My hair looked healthy and shiny instead of dull. The scent was great too, not too overpowering but definitely nice. It also made my hair softer, probably because of the unique repairing serum that’s in the shampoo and conditioner. Overall, my hair looked healthier.

If you have hair that’s looking dull, check out Dove Shine Therapy shampoo and conditioner. It definitely does what it claims to and it smells great while doing it.

Available at your local drugstore for $6.

Softlips Lip Balm in Strawberry Sherbet

Posted in Face, Lips, Product Review, Sensitive Skin, Softlips at 11:00 am by geeekygirl

Bailey

Bailey

I was in the market for a new lip balm because my adorable dog chewed on my Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm. He loves chewing on them because he’s tempted by the smell, and he knows he’s not supposed to, but he just can’t help himself. How can I stay mad at such an adorable face?

So after checking out all the available choices at Shopper’s, I finally decided on Softlips Lip Balm in Strawberry Sherbet. I thought the flavor sounded delicious and I really like the fact that it has an SPF of 20. With my fair skin I’m always conscientious of ensuring I’m protected from those pesky UVA/UVB rays.

When I got home I put it on and was surprised to feel my lips getting really tingly. Then it got even worse, so bad in fact that it was almost painful. Unfortunately I’m allergic to one of the ingredients. I’m not sure which one it is, but I’m definately allergic to it. I’ve had a similar reaction to a plumping lip gloss at Sephora – I don’t remember what it was – but even that tingly feeling wasn’t as bad as the reaction from this lip balm. I have sensitive skin and have to be careful about what cosmetics I use and even the laundry detergent I buy, but I’ve never had this level of reaction from a lip product.

Although I would have loved to really like this product, I can’t even wear it. It smells great, has SPF in it, and I love the shape – skinnier and longer than a typical lip balm.

Available at your local drugstore for $5.

Marie Claire November 2008

Posted in Marie Claire at 10:00 am by geeekygirl

The November issue of Marie Claire is now available and it has some great articles. My favorite has to be three lists of essential must-haves – one for hair, skin care, and makeup – put together by beauty experts. The great part about this is that each list’s total is under $100! They show you where drugstore brands will do and where to spend more money. There’s also an article about four everyday working women and their own personal style. They share their secrets and tips for helping you come up with a style all your own. Lastly, there’s an article on winter skin myths about what you should – or shouldn’t – be doing for your skin during the colder months.

Happy reading!
