I had been looking for a pretty brown colored nail polish for awhile. There weren’t a whole lot to choose from, but when I saw this shade called Brownie (below)  in Sephora I knew it was the one for me. Isn’t it pretty?

It goes on well and needs two coats to get good coverage that left me with a smooth finish. I really liked he brush and found it easy to work with.

I ended up putting it on that night and I have to say I’ve been impressed ever since. I’ve used it numerous times over the last couple months and I love the way it wears. It has to be one of the longest lasting polishes I’ve ever used – it stays on for what seems like forever with very little chipping.

There are 12 shades available in this line, from red to pink to silver. I think my next purchase might have to be Sormy Pink (above).

Available at your local Sephora for $8 or check it out online here.

PS I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE for Essie’s Matte For You topcoat – but I can’t find it. I’ve asked store employees and both times they have no idea when I’m talking about. So, if you’re a fellow Canadian and have found it somewhere can you let me know, pretty please?

Sephora Nail Polish Corrector Pen

Posted in Nail Polish, Product Review, Sephora at 6:00 am by geeekygirl

Sephora Nail Polish Corrector Pen

I recently discovered one of those things that you don’t know how you survived without it until you had it. That thing for me is the Sephora Nail Polish Corrector Pen. I now use it every single time I do my nails.

As careful as I am putting on nail polish I still find it hard to “stay in the lines”. My hands are just too shaky. The Nail Polish Corrector Pen is just the thing though to fix any mishaps on your cuticles. It has a chiseled tip which allows you to have even more precise control. Although it does smell, it’s more of a dry erase marker smell than a nail polish remover smell – which I have to say is great. Even though the tip does tend to pick up the color of darker polishes a bit, it doesn’t transfer to your fingers.

For those of us who are on a budget and can’t afford mani’s or pedi’s, this product is a great solution to having great looking nails on a budget. I’ve been using mine for close to nine months now and it’s still going strong. This is a definite must have in anyone’s nail polish collection.

The Nail Polish Corrector Pen is available online or at your local Sephora store for $8.

Parlez Vous OPI?

Posted in Nail Polish, OPI, Product Review at 5:00 am by geeekygirl

parlez-vous-opiWhen I first saw the new French Collection from OPI in a magazine I loved it. This shade, Parlez Vous OPI especially stuck out for me. I love the smokey purple shade. It’s so pretty and also a really unique color. There are some other beautiful colors in this collection such as You Don’t Know Jacques! and Eiffel For This Color. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on Parles Vous OPI.

This was my first bottle of OPI polish and of course was really excited to try it on. I have to say though that I didn’t like the brush. It made application hard cause it held way too much polish and when I swiped it on my nail there was just too much. I also find that if I put on coats of polish that are too thick they were more likely to chip soon rather than two thin coats. So after a couple times though I have started to get the hang of the brush and have a lot more control.

All in all though I think this product is worth the $12, even if the brush isn’t the greatest. This may be the one brand of polish I splurge on once or twice a year.

As always, OPI is Toluene, Formaldehyde, and DBP free.

Available at your salon or London Drugs for $12.

Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear

Posted in Nail Polish, Product Review, Sally Hansen at 1:00 pm by geeekygirl

I picked up a new nail color last week. It’s Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in Purple Potion. It’s a deep purple color that I absolutely love. I can tell this color is going to be on my nails long into the fall and winter.

I found this nail polish went on to my nails streak free. However, it did require three coats to get good streak free coverage. I’m not sure if this is because the color is so dark or if it’s the formula. I also thought the bottle was pretty cute, it’s pretty distinctive.

There are 30 colors available in this line, everything from white to black, to everything in between. Xtreme Wear is DBP, Toluene, and Formaldehyde free, which is a bonus. More Xtreme Wear nail polishes will be on my shopping lists, there are some great colors for a great price.

Purple Potion is available at drugstores for a very affordable $2.

Shopping and LÒreal Top Coat

Posted in L'oreal, Nail Polish, Product Review at 7:10 pm by geeekygirl

Sorry about the late post today ladies. I ended up going to Wal Mart this morning to get some new stuff. I spent way too much time looking around at all the cosmetics and other yummy stuff. Expect reviews coming soon of Cover Girl Aqua Smoothers Liquid Foundation, Cover Girl Lash Blast, and Dr Scholl’s For Her Open Shoe Insoles.

Also if you have any suggestions for posts that you’d like to see or products you’d like to see reviewed, just leave me a comment.

Meanwhile I’d like to review L’Oreal’s Top Coat. I picked it up a couple weeks ago to see how it would work. I have to say that I’m pretty impressed with it. For being a drugstore brand I think it really works well in addition to being long lasting. It leaves my nails looking shiney as well as protected. It really helps to keep polish from chipping. With my last brand of top coat I would apply every day to keep my polish from chipping but with L’Oreal I only apply every other day to keep my nails looking beautiful.

L’Oreal Top Coat is available at drugstores for $4.

Sally Hansen’s Certainly Cherry

Posted in Nail Polish, Product Review, Sally Hansen at 1:00 pm by geeekygirl

I recently bought Sally Hansen’s 10 Day Nail Color in Certainly Cherry. With the trend this summer of all the bright colors I thought this would be a great one to pick up. Other similar colors are Essie’s Movers and Shakers, OPI’s I’m India Mood for Love, and OPI’s That’s Hot! Pink from the Mod About Brights collection, although Certainly Cherry is brighter than all of them.

Certainly Cherry (Sorry the pic is so dark)

Essie’s Short Shorts are described as “shockingly flamingo pink”.

OPI’s I’m India Mood For Love

OPI’s That’s Hot! Pink

The 10 Day No Chip collection come in 24 different colors. This is my second from this collection, my first was a purplish Always Amethyst. I loved how well it stayed on with absolutely no chipping whatsoever, although to be honest I only had it on for a few days before I took it off to put on another new color. Usually I have nail polish chipping off in 2 days though, so I was pretty impressed with this one.

According to the website, the 10 Day No Chip nail polish:

-has a patented formula with Micro-Minerals and Calcium provides a
chip-free manicure

-Perfect-Glide brush for flawless application

-contains no DBP, Toluene or Free Formaldehyde

-is available in 24 chip-resistant shades

I found it easy to apply and went on streak free. I used one coat of base coat, two of Certainly Cherry, and another two of top coat. I would definitely recommend it. It’s great to be able to get the same look of a more expensive polish in one that won’t break the bank.

You can pick is up for about $5 at drug stores.

Revlon Tropical Teal nail polish

Posted in Nail Polish, Product Review, Revlon at 2:58 am by geeekygirl

I picked up Revlon’s new Tropical Teal nail polish this week and tried it out on my nails a few days ago. I really liked the color and thought it was great with all the bright colors in nail polish this summer. I haven’t used Revlon polish in a long time was interested in how it would work out.

While I loved it in the bottle, the color looks more blue in the bottle than on my nails, where it looks almost green. I do like the color though, even if it’s not what I was expecting. One thing that I really like about it though is that it’s formaldehyde and toluene free.

I wasn’t entirely impressed with how it went on, I found the brush a little hard to control, resulting in nail polish where it shouldn’t be. But the Q-tips and nail polish remover weren’t far so it was easily fixed. I think it might just take awhile for me and my not-so-good hand eye coordination to get used to the brush.

I applied a coat of Sally Hansen Extended Wear base coat on my clean nails first to make sure that the Tropical Teal would get a good hold onto my nails. Then I put on two coats of the nail polish (there’s no way one coat would have good enough coverage) and then another coat of L’Oreal’s top coat. So far it hasn’t chipped, which is good. I hate having chipped polish, it looks sloppy to me.

I picked Tropical Teal up for $5 or $6 at London Drugs.

Do you have any nail polish tips or tricks you’d like to share? Leave a comment.

UPDATE: Five days after I put it on there’s still no chipping! That’s amazing for my nails.
